What's Happening

MY STRANGE WORLD...Part XXVII (04.08.04)

I have to say that my world is nothing short of strange, but always in an interesting way.  But, before I even get on that, I have to say thank you to Fhena for allowing my band the pleasure of performing for her mother's birthday/house party last Friday!  I admit that we had initially toned down our trademark sound because it was an older crowd starting from the late 40s on up.  Imagine our surprise when they asked for some hip-hop or anything up-tempo--I just hope that when I hit 60 that I can get down the way the folks were! I mean, we did some Latin and they started to Salsa, we did House and it started to look like Sol Fusion...just a good old-fashioned, new school, house party!

I also want to say thank you to a very dedicated reader of mine, Brettina, who always encourages me and has the nicest things to say with an e-mail every once in a while; I apologize I haven't been able to return your message because either the mail server is down or something's wrong with this particular computer I've been working on, but I just wanted to make sure you knew that I got it if you reading this, which you should be ! Saturday was cool as well and I got a few surprises during our performance that night when sitting right beside me, just as I had walked in to set up, was my first girlfriend from college and her cousin, a classmate of mine. If you're reading, you still lookin' as fly as ever...it was good seeing you again after all this time, and welcome back to the ATL! Oddly enough, I was contacted by yet another former girlfriend, last month, who looked me up and came across this website.

I know you're married and all, but you're still "the beautiful one" in my book...stay up and give me a shout whenever you decide to visit here on the warmer side of the East Coast--LOL! Come to think of it, I've been in contact, in one way or another, with every one of my former girlfriends in the past 6 months who either contacted me to say "hi" and see how I was, or we just happened to bump into each other. I could feel that to be kinda weird or simply enjoy the fact that I have been blessed and honored to have been in the company of such extraordinary women--and we're all still cool (i.e. monogamy is a good habit to have, men)! Anyway, Sunday was an interesting way to finish off a very good weekend, overall. I attended the 68th Annual Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park (my first time, and thank you to Tara Murphy of www.360media.net for inviting ATLANTAHAPPS.COM). Dogs wouldn't be my first preference if I had a pet but I like animals nonetheless, and I really enjoyed watching people with their pets.  I especially enjoyed the Disc Dog competition (a frisbee, an owner, an owner's dog, and a football-like gridiron field setup).  It pretty much resembled a quarterback throwing to a wide-receiver during a practice drill, except the wide receiver caught with its mouth. Some dogs were REALLY good and obviously had been well-trained--some of the leaping catches were spectacular--and some dogs (and owners) were not too talented, or that bright, for the matter! The food vendors were making my stomach growl (it was like a county fair with all types of homemade styles as well as the funnel cakes)! The art vendors had some of the best pieces I've seen in a while at an outdoor function.

Radio stations were also scattered around doing their promotional thing, but hearing Ludacris' "Stand Up" contrasting with the image of predominantly white families (although any ethnicity would contrast) passing by with children in strollers didn't seem to click. The music performances were pretty good although I wasn't familiar with any of the acts (except for my friend Trina from 3-5 Human) at the various performance stages (but I did recognize many of the cover songs they performed). Speaking of songs, let me segue to the strangely-interesting or interestingly-strange part that I mentioned earlier. They had this Karaoke (I hope I'm spelling that right) tent and some people with some of the most hideous voices actually had the nerve to perform--although they were competing for prizes like Braves tickets!

I felt like it was American Idol all over again and was half-expecting to see a picture of Idol-reject turned "star", William "She Bangs" Hung as a spokesmodel for this event--did you even know dude has a record deal AND website with even more hideous samples of him singing online??? Please pardon my computer profanity but...what the @#^%??!! Go to: www.williamhung.net if you need a good laugh! Anyway, after hearing this one guy TORTURE then MURDER the classic, "Always and Forever", I was going to leave when a very beautiful young lady signed up, so naturally I waited to watch and see if she really had skills or was trying to get by on looks alone.  She chose "I'm Every Woman" and actually gave a performance worthy of the standing ovation she received.  As a musician, I HAD to approach and find out more and learned that she was actually classically trained (I'm talkin' singing operatic arias, and stuff like dat, in like 5 different languages, man).  She had only recently moved here so she wasn't fully aware of the entertainment scene but wanted to network some more and wanted to work with more musicians (CHA-CHING!).

I didn't see a ring or any dude with her so I stayed a little longer and talked some more, and before you know it we're hangin' out at Little 5 as I'm showing her around and we also stop in all these clothing stores as she tries on some dresses--"oh my God" and "dayum" is all I could say (in my head, of course)! I kept thinking...has it been three hours or three months yet? You know how you just feel very comfortable around someone very quickly? That's pretty much the only explanation. Anyway, we ended our impromptu outting and exchanged numbers and ended up conversing later that night--she is VERY smart/intellectual...I was highly impressed!  On a whim, I called her the next day asking if she wanted to go grocery shopping with me at Whole Foods but she had company as her parents had come up to visit her for the week..............................how the hell did I end up having dinner with her and her mother that night?!!  Either way, I had fun and her mother was very silly, I had her laughing all night, so I was definitely in my element while the daughter was looking a little embarrased at both of us! We finally parted ways as I went to an event and they went to see a relative of theirs. Okay...go ahead and say it...that was FAST wasn't it?! Hang out with the woman the first day you meet her and meet her mother the next night?! Oh...and her mother also sings and her father is also a musician so me telling them about Apache's open mike on Wednesdays might mean that I may run into Poppa as well--I ain't even went out on a real date with this woman yet!!!

That's it for me this week. Oh, and I forgot to mention about the Marvin Gaye Tribute at Apache last Thursday!!! That was a dope @$$ show from the time I walked in with the DJs playing all the Marvin classics as well as B-side cuts that radio neglects to play, all the way through each of the performers covering one hit after the next.  Julie Dexter did her thing, opening it up with her "reggae remix" cover of "Make Me Wanna Holler" as well Mel Johnson getting everybody on their feet like a house party for "Got to Give it Up", but among all of the other great performances/performers, I have to say that the original and impromptu "Happy Birthday Marvin" performed by Laurnea and India.Arie (who wasn't scheduled to perform) was a pleasant surprise for the audience! Okay...that's all I wanted to add, so do YOUR thing this week for once and let the world revolve around you for a change...of course, if you're the conceited/vain type, try revolving around other people's world and find that lost treasure we call "humility"

peace2ya!

Ahmed Sirour -A Product of a Sudanese-Arab (Muslim) father and a Bajan-Caribbean (Christian) mother. Ahmed was a "diamond in the rough" hewn from Brooklyn, now undergoing "polishing and re-cutting" in Atlanta. This serves as a premise to his diverse nature that comes from a diverse background. His poetic style is influenced by his love of music...specifically, jazz improvisation. He sometimes uses a rhyme form he calls "Broken Word"; basically, the rhyme scheme alternates between words and phrases but with a definite flow just like a jazz jam session where the art of freestyle takes place. Although it would seem that hip-hop, another of his influences, would seem to be a more apt description of his style, it is the marriage of youthful innovation paired with classic refinement. He is also moved by the Harlem Renaissance, which he feels is resurfacing, in spirit, throughout many major metropolitan cities, especially Atlanta. More importantly, he is moved by his belief in spirituality, believing that he is merely a vessel of God to bring forth the talent that he feels he has been blessed with.

Ahmed's goal, this year, to finally publish his first collection of work entitled, "This Would Be A Love Song...If Only I Could Sing"; a collection of poetry, essays, and short stories based on his life's experiences in the area of love and life. Ahmed is also a musician (keyboardist) and plays for and with many talented artists in Atlanta (and those who travel through the city from abroad). He currently represents for Hidden Beach Recordings (www.hiddenbeach.com), so he keeps one foot in the business and one foot (and two hands) in the art, itself. It is his hope and prayer that beyond enjoying his work, that people are actually moved, emotionally/intellectually/spiritually, by the words they read, and to know that this is merely a power that is coming through him and not from him.

SOULFUL HAPPS - A SPOTLIGHT ON URBAN MUSIC & CULTURE

Imagine for a moment if Marvin were still alive and able to record with the Roots... Or what about Pete Rock breaking-off a track for Minnie Ripperton or Donnie Hathaway. What kind of energy would these collaborations create??? The answer is found in a new Soul Music Series entitled  SOULFUL HAPPS, and it's unlike anything you've ever heard. This section features artists who produce the sounds  of 70's Soul, Acid Jazz, Hip Hop, and Rare Grooves appreciated by music lovers around the Atlanta area. But it's more than a sound... It's a feeling... bringing the past and the future together in a rather unique way.  Click here for details

WHAT THEY ARE SAYIN...

Mr.Sirour,

I live in LA and was recently in your wonderful city and love reading you're column, Very nice. Miles...

Mr.Sirour,

I would like to begin by saying I enjoy your weekly "HAPPS" commentary. I look forward to it every Monday evening when I have down time at work. I appreciate you keeping us 'Atliens' abreast of the goings of Atlanta and upcoming music artists. Please keep doing what you are doing!

Mr.Sirour,

Now, I would like to comment briefly on your commentary for this week. Kudos to you for being honest and candid! How refreshing to hear such positive and thought provoking thoughts. I agree with you in so many ways. Just as a smile can be contagious, so can positivity.

P.S-- I saw the plug on your site for the Tarrazu Coffee Bar. It sounds like a great place. I will be trying it out this week.

Thank You,

Brettina Burney

I feel you 100% when you stated you feel a shift in the wind of this industry. I have been told by enough shallow producers to change my singing style to sound like this one or that.  I was fed up of hearing this over and over so I took out my keyboards and produced myself. I am looking for people with a true vision of taking real music into the future to either assist me in promotions and possibly management.  If you get a minute check me out  at www.zuudiakusentertainment.com . Keep doing what you do, I will too.

Peace
Jas Tunica El

Ahmed -- Recently I read your column for "ATLANTAHAPPS.COM" As I was reading, I kept trying to listen to this very haunting melody that was playing in the background...and then finally I had to stop reading and just listen.  You generously praise so many artists in your column, but  your gifts are special too.  I look forward to hearing more from you.  "Without You" is just beautiful - I could listen to it all day.

I also am a singer/songwriter here in Atlanta. Last year, I released my "No Regrets" CD. Your words about a change in the music industry are so true and great encouragement.  Thank you and keep spreading the truth.  God bless you!

A Collection of Poetry, Essays, and Short Stories from the life of Ahmed Sirour. A new movement in poetry, descriptive essay writing, and innovative story-telling.

Ahmed writes the way a jazz musician plays during an improvisational jam session paired with the way a lyricist freestyles in hip-hop form. It is a marriage of the past and present that creates a fusion to set the tempo for the future. His writing surpasses his racial makeup and simply becomes a unique American story by a unique American writer.
