What's Happening

THE YIN & THE YANG (04.22.04)

"The Bad & The Good" is what I mean by the title, but unlike the news, I'm only gonna spend a few seconds on the negative and focus more on the positive. Life's gotta have its balance, right? Well, lemme get the bad out of the way first, and please excuse the strong language (mostly in the suggestive sense otherwise the FCC may ban me from this site ) as it may surprise some of you because this is as raw as I've allowed myself to get on here in over a year's time of writing articles. Many of you, especially women, are familiar with what I'm about to express my views on...

For those of you who watched Oprah earlier this week concerning the topic, "Brothers on the Down Low", author J.L. King is a @$$hole! I wouldn't drop one red cent to support an idiot like him! True, it needed to have been exposed that there are men who lie to their wives or girlfriends while living a double life sleeping with other men, and exposing their significant others to a possible HIV infection, which has hit an all new high for African-Americans (especially women); but, this bastard actually tried to excuse his actions and even had the audacity to say that he wasn't homosexual but just that his acts were??!! BULL$#!T!! The very consensual act itself defines him as such (and no offense to those who openly are). Additionally, he actually had the nerve to say that women, especially married women, should be ready to accept if their man has this desire to be with men, albeit just for physical gratification, and be willing to just deal with it if he's upfront with her about it (kinda like Eric Benet's "sexual addiction")--excuse me, but that would still be called an extra-marital affair/adultery just as it would be if it were with another woman, and you advise that she just deal with it??!! I give you "props" in that you marketed your book very well by appearing on Oprah, fed into the collective fears of women nationwide, and capitalized on a "phenomenon" that is nothing more than a new label on a very old practice that has existed before your dumb @$$ was even born...just to sell books and help you catch up on the bills you now have because your wife left your sorry behind broke! It's bad enough the remaining heterosexual African-American men who are about something good, and I'm including myself, now have the added pressure of meeting women who are even more cautious because they saw this program and already view the Black man with a guarded and pessimistic eye.  Not that you'd be reading this, but if this somehow got to you, and I know you wouldn't care anyway, but know that you have my utter disrespect and contempt because of your infidelity, first and foremost, and next for your pseudo-intellectual sophistry that you used to try to vindicate your image while passing off an age old problem like a new thing that never existed until you "exposed" it! J.L. King, you are an embarrassment to men (straight or gay), a punk in the truest sense, and know that karma is a funny thing dude! If you ever come to Atlanta for a book-signing, I hope you get clowned...but don't worry about me 'cause you're far from worth any of my personal time aside from writing this!

Okay...as for the good aspects of things, I am so excited by the coming events this week and those to follow that I really don't even want to write any descriptive commentary but just dive right into what's happening in Atlanta. However, I'll just type for a minute to calm my general enthusiasm and maybe something worthwhile will be said. First, I'd like to thank Cocktails (co-founder of the Live Poets Society) for including The Formula as the house band for his group's finale for National Poetry Month (see under Tuesday/04.27.04 events). I also want to give a quick birthday shout-out to my drummer, Che' Marshall celebrating his birthday this Saturday (04.24.04) although he will actually be performing with Julie Dexter who will be the opening act for what will be the "UK Soul Explosion" taking over on U.S. soil at Apache Cafe', featuring Omar (see details under Saturday/04.24.04). I also appreciate what you've brought to The Formula from the very start as we are close approaching a year since the idea struck me to create a band that could freestyle an original composition at the drop of a dime, taking improvisation to a new level!

All I have to say is that it's time to have some big fun this weekend, as Atlanta is turning up it's usual level of social energy to give us a pre-Summer appetizer equivalent to a "4th of July" weekend! Now, if I can just get my hands on a Six Flags Season Pass while it's still on sale for $49.99 till the end of the month (pays for itself in just two visits and allows you access to Six Flags theme parks nationwide--that was a "free" plug ) I'll be straight as 6 o'clock!

Anyway, if any of you e-mail me, or call me (for those who have my number) after reading this week's events, then ask me what's going on in the city--something is seriously wrong with you!! LOL

then...

I have been looking forward to the opportunity when I could finally see this particular artist live, given I wasn't quite sure when I'd have enough money to travel to London to see him, which would have been one of the reasons to go.  I'm sorry, but if you don't already know about Omar and you claim to know and love the whole nu-classic soul music scene, then I really feel bad for you! This is probably going to be your one opportunity, in a long time to come, to get the vibe of the Jazz Cafe' in London right here in Atlanta! I've heard and own just about everything he's put out and although I'm playing Saturday night, I'm glad there'll be two shows 'cause I'll be off and running to catch the last one!

For more info, call 404.885.9198 'cause Vinyl's website doesn't even list it. First Omar, then Rachelle/Jennifer/Oleta/Syleena, and now Trina...my God this is a great week!

In closing...

As much as what you see is going on this week, there will be plenty more jumpin' off that either I couldn't fit on here, or will probably pop up at the last minute as most things do, but your directive is to take in as much as you possibly can, 'cause after a stressful week (and there will be many more where they came from) you DESERVE to have fun! Oh, before I put the last period on here, let me just say that you DO NOT want to miss the next Session Saturday @ Tarrazu this week--and you'll have plenty of time to fit us in despite the phenomenal concerts that will occurring around us! I have a few surprise guests who will be coming through, but one in particular that you may not be expecting...this very well-known artist said that they wanted to come through and sit in with The Formula after wanting to for a while but never having the time to do so until now. If you miss this opportunity then hey...your loss! All I'll say is this weekend is gonna be fiyah! Holla...

peace2ya!

MY STRANGE WORLD...Part XXVII

Just keep Moving

Ahmed Sirour -A Product of a Sudanese-Arab (Muslim) father and a Bajan-Caribbean (Christian) mother. Ahmed was a "diamond in the rough" hewn from Brooklyn, now undergoing "polishing and re-cutting" in Atlanta. This serves as a premise to his diverse nature that comes from a diverse background. His poetic style is influenced by his love of music...specifically, jazz improvisation. He sometimes uses a rhyme form he calls "Broken Word"; basically, the rhyme scheme alternates between words and phrases but with a definite flow just like a jazz jam session where the art of freestyle takes place. Although it would seem that hip-hop, another of his influences, would seem to be a more apt description of his style, it is the marriage of youthful innovation paired with classic refinement. He is also moved by the Harlem Renaissance, which he feels is resurfacing, in spirit, throughout many major metropolitan cities, especially Atlanta. More importantly, he is moved by his belief in spirituality, believing that he is merely a vessel of God to bring forth the talent that he feels he has been blessed with.

Ahmed's goal, this year, to finally publish his first collection of work entitled, "This Would Be A Love Song...If Only I Could Sing"; a collection of poetry, essays, and short stories based on his life's experiences in the area of love and life. Ahmed is also a musician (keyboardist) and plays for and with many talented artists in Atlanta (and those who travel through the city from abroad). He currently represents for Hidden Beach Recordings (www.hiddenbeach.com), so he keeps one foot in the business and one foot (and two hands) in the art, itself. It is his hope and prayer that beyond enjoying his work, that people are actually moved, emotionally/intellectually/spiritually, by the words they read, and to know that this is merely a power that is coming through him and not from him.

SOULFUL HAPPS - A SPOTLIGHT ON URBAN MUSIC & CULTURE

Imagine for a moment if Marvin were still alive and able to record with the Roots... Or what about Pete Rock breaking-off a track for Minnie Ripperton or Donnie Hathaway. What kind of energy would these collaborations create??? The answer is found in a new Soul Music Series entitled  SOULFUL HAPPS, and it's unlike anything you've ever heard. This section features artists who produce the sounds  of 70's Soul, Acid Jazz, Hip Hop, and Rare Grooves appreciated by music lovers around the Atlanta area. But it's more than a sound... It's a feeling... bringing the past and the future together in a rather unique way.  Click here for details

WHAT THEY ARE SAYIN...

Mr.Sirour,

I live in LA and was recently in your wonderful city and love reading you're column, Very nice. Miles...

Mr.Sirour,

I would like to begin by saying I enjoy your weekly "HAPPS" commentary. I look forward to it every Monday evening when I have down time at work. I appreciate you keeping us 'Atliens' abreast of the goings of Atlanta and upcoming music artists. Please keep doing what you are doing!

Mr.Sirour,

Now, I would like to comment briefly on your commentary for this week. Kudos to you for being honest and candid! How refreshing to hear such positive and thought provoking thoughts. I agree with you in so many ways. Just as a smile can be contagious, so can positivity.

P.S-- I saw the plug on your site for the Tarrazu Coffee Bar. It sounds like a great place. I will be trying it out this week.

Thank You,

Brettina Burney

I feel you 100% when you stated you feel a shift in the wind of this industry. I have been told by enough shallow producers to change my singing style to sound like this one or that.  I was fed up of hearing this over and over so I took out my keyboards and produced myself. I am looking for people with a true vision of taking real music into the future to either assist me in promotions and possibly management.  If you get a minute check me out  at www.zuudiakusentertainment.com . Keep doing what you do, I will too.

Peace
Jas Tunica El

Ahmed -- Recently I read your column for "ATLANTAHAPPS.COM" As I was reading, I kept trying to listen to this very haunting melody that was playing in the background...and then finally I had to stop reading and just listen.  You generously praise so many artists in your column, but  your gifts are special too.  I look forward to hearing more from you.  "Without You" is just beautiful - I could listen to it all day.

I also am a singer/songwriter here in Atlanta. Last year, I released my "No Regrets" CD. Your words about a change in the music industry are so true and great encouragement.  Thank you and keep spreading the truth.  God bless you!

A Collection of Poetry, Essays, and Short Stories from the life of Ahmed Sirour. A new movement in poetry, descriptive essay writing, and innovative story-telling.

Ahmed writes the way a jazz musician plays during an improvisational jam session paired with the way a lyricist freestyles in hip-hop form. It is a marriage of the past and present that creates a fusion to set the tempo for the future. His writing surpasses his racial makeup and simply becomes a unique American story by a unique American writer.
