On
October 3, 2002 history was made in Atlanta. Two of the youngest
and most powerful morning show personalities in Atlanta met for
a no-holds-barred interview at Justin's Restaurant in Atlanta. Ryan
Cameron (Hot 107.9, The Ryan Cameron morning show) and Frank Ski
(V-103, The Frank Ski Morning show) met face to face, at an invitation-only
crowd of over 300 people. Long running rumors of personal beef between
the two have abounded since Frank's arrival on the Atlanta radio
scene in the late 90's.Until Frank Ski's arrival, Cameron was the
number one man on the radio at V-103 in 1995.Cameron left Atlanta to do morning radio
in Washington D.C and Frank Ski at the time was the number one man
in the Baltimore and D.C. market. A few years later, radio mogul Kathy
Hughes of Radio One decided Atlanta needed a rap radio station and
offered Cameron a hosting his own morning show, that would bring him back to Atlanta,
to the upstart 97.5.
Tension was building at Justin's due to Frank Ski's tardiness -
he was over an hour late due to traffic problems. Cameron and the
crowd patiently waited for Frank Ski's arrival by telling jokes.
Once Frank Ski arrived, he quickly took the hot seat as Cameron
began questioning him about how the public views his on-air personality.
While answering Cameron's questions, Frank Ski appeared composed
and his responses were well thought out. At one point Frank stated,
"I came from nothing, so for me to have something means the
world to me. I lived with roaches in efficiency hotels; I ate from
food carts and was damn near homeless several times." Frank
exhibited unbelievable control during difficult questioning by Cameron.
Frank spoke of wanting to make his show a family show and pointed
out how he encourages each morning show personality to talk about
their family and issues that are important to them. Ryan pointed out that
the popular public perception is that Frank Ski's show is all about
who Frank knows and who Frank socializes with, the crowd reacted
with loud applause in agreement.
During the entire interview, both men were very professional. Ryan stated, "We will never let
white America see us fuel the fire that often destroys the nucleus
of black America."
One of the greatest moments came during
the interview where it was evident that Cameron wanted to put all
quarrels aside, by offering his hand to Frank Ski's, if to say "let's
squash this beef." Frank replied, "Man you remember when
you came to D.C. I called you and said if you need anything call
me?" Ryan acknowledged this. Once the interview was over, I
was allowed into the VIP area where I overheard Cameron say to Frank,
"Let's hook up and do something." I walked over and shook
both men's hands. I was impressed by them, because they did not
seem to be putting on a show, simply for the camera. I could tell
by looking at both of them that this was more personal than anyone
would have ever imagined.
Congratulations to Brad Walton and Donald Jarmond of Party Promotions.com
for hosting a wonderful event. We are looking forward the next one.
