FREE Jazz with Scotty Barnhart - The 7th annual Jazz@Ebenezer concert series welcomes acclaimed jazz trumpeter Scotty Barnhart as the featured artist on Friday evening, July 16th, at 7:00pm.

The Rev. Raphael G. Warnock, Senior Pastor of the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, the church’s congregation and its November Birth Month Club are proud to present a free exhilarating jazz concert featuring Barnhart and other fine performing artists.

Scotty Barnhart is a two-time Grammy Award winner with eighteen years as a featured trumpet soloist with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. He joined pianist Marcus Roberts on three critically-acclaimed recordings and has over ten recordings with music masters such as Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Ray Charles, Tito Puente, and Lena Horne.

In 2009, Unity Music released Barnhart’s debut solo CD titled Say It Plain, which features such jazz legends as Clark Terry and Wynton Marsalis. Say It Plain climbed to #3 on National Jazz Radio.

After hearing Say It Plain, Bill Cosby proclaimed "Scotty Barnhart's soulful work combines a mastery of tradition with vibrant originality. I love it."

Barnhart comes home to Atlanta to perform at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church at 400 Auburn Avenue. Although now based in Los Angeles, he grew up playing trumpet at Ebenezer where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., christened him and Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr., baptized him.

Proceeds from Jazz@Ebenezer concert donations will be contributed to building Ebenezer’s Martin Luther King, Sr., Community Resource Center. Ebenezer is historically known as the sanctuary where Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., worshipped and preached his ministry of nonviolence.

Soul vocalist and songwriter Rahsaan Patterson is another in the line of new-school R&B singers (Maxwell, Erykah Badu) with a bit more integrity than most of the chart-toppers during the 1990s. Patterson proved himself a more than competent songwriter as well, penning hits like Tevin Campbell's "Back to the World" and Brandy's "Baby." Those successes finally earned him a recording contract with MCA, which issued his self-titled debut album in early 1997. Love in Stereo followed two years later. After a hiatus from the performance spotlight, he released After Hours in August of 2005 and Wines & Spirits in September 2007. These two albums placed him near -- or at -- the top of the R&B underground. ~ John Bush & Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Maria Howell (Home Page)

Powerful. Riveting. Sultry. Mere words can only capture the refrain of her awesome talent. Maria Howell is much more. She is the ballad of beauty and elegance. The melodies flowing from the petite vocalist are truly amazing. While casting a spellbinding smile, she mesmerizes her captive audience with incredible harmonies and rhythms.

Howell's signature film performance as the choir soloist in "The Color Purple" was quoted by one critic as being "one of the most stirring moments!" Her rendition of “God Is Trying to Tell You Something” was memorable for all who saw it, but the offerings of the all-grown-up Maria are truly unforgettable, eliciting stirring moments, one after another. Check out Monday's with Maria, at Sambuca Jazz Lounge.
